Tunisia has been producing olive oil since the Roman times, the country has 1.7 million hectares of olive trees with about 75 million trees employing more than 300,000 farmers which makes Tunisia the biggest producer and exporter of Olive Oil outside the European Union with more than 20% share of the olive tree orchards worldwide.
Last year olive oil exports in Tunisia reached almost 70,000 tons in the period ranging between January 1 up to June 2012 and according to the current government, this figure is expected to bypass 85,000 tons this year within the same period, especially with the increase of number of companies that export olive oil in bulk and bottled.
Tunisia also benefits from its sunnier climate regarding olive harvesting; olives ripens quickly which makes it possible to harvest them months earlier than competitors in other countries, mainly ones in Europe.
